Overnight ratings at last night’s 88th Academy Awards ceremony did not deliver. Despite the promise of Chris Rock’s witty commentary (and Leonardo DiCaprio’s first win for his role in The Revenant), the Oscars rating were at an eight-year low. The ceremony was second in a row to generate controversy over the lack of racial diversity in the nominees, with not a single actor of color nominated in 20 slots. The telecast averaged a 23.4 rating and a 36% share of the homes using television from 8:30 p.m. to 11:51 p.m. EST, according to Nielsen’s overnight data from 56 large U.S. TV markets. The numbers reflect a six percent drop in overnight data from the 2015 ratings, with the full data expected to be released today.
