A+E Studios’ Roots, a portrait of American slavery, will make its international premiere on the opening night of MIPTV in Cannes on April 4. Based on Alex Haley’s 1976 novel, Roots tells the story of Kunta Kinte, starting with his capture in Gambia to his enslavement in colonial America, where his family fights against slavery. Developed by HISTORY, the cast of the new series includes Forest Whitaker, Anna Paquin, Laurence Fishburne, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Anika Noni Rose. Roots will simulcast in the U.S. on HISTORY, A&E and Lifetime beginning Monday, May 30. Anna Paquin, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Anika Noni Rose and Malachi Kirby will join the international premiere, along with executive producer Mark Wolper and co-executive producer LeVar Burton.
