As reported by the Los Angeles Times, 2015 was the year of “peak TV.” Earlier in December, FX released new research that puts the number of scripted series on broadcast networks, basic and pay cable networks and streaming services at 409, the highest number recorded. Julie Piepenkotter, evp, research for FX Networks said that this number has doubled in the past six years—there were 211 scripted original series in 2009, and 376 in 2014. The scripted series count has risen for the past three years across all distribution platforms, with the biggest growth in basic cable networks.
