The nominations for the 86th Annual Academy Awards were announced today (Jan. 16, 2014). While many of the announcements were expected — Amy Adams for American Hustle for example and 12 Years a Slave for Best Picture — there were also some surprising snubs.
Tom Hanks was a surprising shun for performance in Captain Phillips, as was Lee Daniels’ The Butler, which was not nominated for Best Picture. And one of its stars, Oprah Winfrey, was also shunned in the acting category.
In the documentary category, Blackfish, the controversial and popular film that criticizes SeaWorld was not nominated.
In the foreign-language category there were a couple of snubs, including Chinese film The Grandmaster from Wong Kar Wai and French film Blue is the Warmest Color.
The awards will be doled out on Sunday, March 2. The full list is below:
