After a red carpet opening event at the Majestic Hotel on Monday night, MIPCOM CANNES’ second day was just as busy as day 1. Distributors’ schedules were full and the Palais aisles were brimming with participants.
Today’s conferences and networking events included the FRAPA Formats Summit, which was held in the Seaview Producers Hub from 10:30am. The panel was composed of TF1’s Julien Degroote, Prosieben’s Hannes Hiller, CBC’s Jessica Schmiedchen, Roku’s Brian Tannenbaum and the BBC’s Joanne Wallace; the main topics addressed by panelists were co-production and co-development.
All speakers emphasized the current good health of unscripted content, TF1’s Degroote pointed out that alternative content on TF1 primetime slots grew 30 percent from the previous year, amounting to a total of 120 evenings. The same was indicated by the BBC’s Wallace, who stressed the massive acceleration of unscripted commissions, partly due to the difficulty in delivering scripted fare in the past few years. The Summit continued until 12:30 with networking opportunities for all participants.
Afternoon sessions highlighted African Drama, International Co-productions, the New Rights’ Picture and the Evolution of Scripted, among others.
Mastermind keynotes included a conversation with Banijay CEO Marco Bassetti, who expanded on the integration of over 120 labels into the company, and said to be expecting consolidation in general to grow even more. On the opportunities offered by VOD business models, he felt strongly that talent and creators should be given more value in terms of IP rights, which will ultimately result in better content.
The market’s second day closed with a series of cocktail parties and evening receptions, held both at stands and outside locations.
