ViacomCBS International Studios (VIS) will invest 25 percent of its budget in Latin America in BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) content.
VIS’s effort in creating and developing BIPOC content is part of a companywide initiative to expand its diverse and inclusive representation. VCNI’s Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Asia divisions have also pledged to allot 30 percent of their 2021 budget to produce content highlighting underrepresented groups.
ViacomCBS currently has three projects in development that address the diversity of the black population in Brazil. Drama series Maria do Socorro follows its female protagonists as they help other women, amidst a discriminatory and sexist society. A coisa tá preta is a stand-up comedy depicting the daily life of artists. Additionally, children’s musical series Funknautas portrays Bettina and her three friends who form a pop/funk band.
Federico Cuervo, SVP and head of VIS, stated, “Diversity and inclusion are essential in everything we do for all of our content. ViacomCBS, as a company, is committed to D&I by implementing several initiatives. At VIS, we are taking big strides towards fulfilling that pledge both in front and behind the camera.”
