Canadian festival Hot Docs and Blue Ice Group will partner with The New York Times’ ‘Op-Docs,’ announced yesterday at a reception during the festival. The deal will see short documentary films commissioned from African filmmakers to be featured on the newspaper’s digital forum. Five to eight projects will be picked from projects already submitted to the Hot Docs-Blue Ice Group Documentary Fund and Alumni over the next year, as well as from the 2017 selection. To date, the Hot Docs-Blue Ice Group Documentary Fund has awarded grants to 40 projects from 15 African countries. Past recipients include Riaan Hendricks’ The Devil’s Lair, a 2013 official selection at Hot Docs and IDFA; Nadine Salib’s Mother of the Unborn, an 2015 official selection at IDFA 2015; Jihan El-Tahri’s 2015 official selection at TIFF, Nasser, among others.
