On the occasion of the 66th Berlin International Film Festival, the European Audiovisual Observatory released its first estimates for European cinema attendance in 2015. The numbers show that total admissions in the European Union increased by 7.6% to 980 million tickets sold, 69 million more than in 2014. Germany lead the growth, with an increase of 14.4%, followed by Italy, Spain and Poland. This marks the second highest level registered in the EU (2009 was the highest, the year of Avatar and its 3D novelty.)
